Lexington One names Goodman District Teacher of the Year
Thursday night, April 30, 2009, at a special event honoring the district’s
teachers of the year, Lexington County School District One announced the
district’s new Teacher of the Year — Betsy P. Goodman.
Goodman teaches EAGLE (gifted and talented) students at Pleasant Hill Elementary
School in Lexington.
She now goes on to compete in the state-level Teacher of
the Year program next year.
PHES Principal Margaret Mitchum said, “Betsy Goodman has the special gift of
being able to create in students a desire to thirst for knowledge and to learn
all that they can possibly learn. She is creative and enthusiastic, and shares
her love for learning with all her students.”
An educator for 25 years, Goodman holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary
education from Lander University, a master’s degree in divergent education from
Columbia College and an Intel Master Teacher Certification.
She began teaching in Greenwood School District 50 in 1984. She took her first
job in Lexington One at Gilbert Elementary in 1990. Goodman also spent time
teaching at Midway and Saxe Gotha elementary schools before moving to Pleasant
Hill Elementary when the school opened in 2006.
Goodman serves as the second vice president of Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional
honors society for women educators, and is a member of the National Storytelling
Society.
Lexington County School District One congratulates M. Scott Frye, Betsy P. Goodman, Carol L. Robertson, Amanda M. Smoak and Jonny R. Thompson. These five outstanding teachers are finalists in the district’s Teacher of the Year competition.
Each year Lexington County School District One recognizes outstanding teachers — teachers who exemplify a commitment and dedication to educating students — during its Teacher of the Year competition.
Scott Frye, a 20-year educator, teaches English at Pelion High.
Betsy Goodman, a teacher for 25 years, teaches EAGLE students at Pleasant Hill
Elementary.
Carol Robertson, who teaches art at Lexington Elementary, has 32 years of
teaching experience.
Amanda Smoak, with eight years of experience, teaches mathematics at Pelion
Middle.
Jonny Thompson possesses 22 years of teaching experience and teaches special
education classes at White Knoll High.
