About the Media Center

Media Center

The media program of Gilbert Middle School is a flexibly scheduled program that allows access to the Media Center in the mornings at 7:30, during the school day with teacher permission and a Media Center pass, and after school.  Teachers may also schedule whole-class instruction to be conducted by the Media Specialist or whole-class use of the Media Center's resources.  Teachers are oriented to the resources and services available through the Media Center at the beginning of each school year with a faculty inservice at which time they are provided a Media Center Policy and Procedure Manual.

Programs

Technology is integrated throughout the total media program with the collection being accessed through an automated catalog system available in classroms.  Also, students are allowed access to Internet, Accelerated Reader computerized reading enrichment program, and DISCUS, a collection of on-line databases mangaged by the SC State Library, to enhance their research and pleasure-reading needs.
A Media Retrieval System managed and maintained by the Media Center is available to teachers who use videotapes to enhance their curriculum.  Other instructional television resources which are available include a distribution center of available videotapes, SCETV, and Cable in the Classroom.  All play-outs, feeds and recordings of programs are coordinated through the Media Center.

Media Center Staff

The Media Center is staffed by one Media specialist and one full-time Media Assistant.  The Media Specialist is responsible for the coordination of the learning media services.  The constant evaluation of these services revolves around the selection, ordering, processing, inventory and circulation of materials both print and nonprint.  The Media Assistant assists the Media Specialist in each of these functions.
