District increases participation in AP coursework and exams

Scores released by the South Carolina Department of Education show Lexington County School District One continues to outpace national and state averages on nationwide assessments with a combined average score of 1067.

Lexington District One had 1,139-student test-takers in 2019; a 29.4% increase over the 880-student test-takers in 2018. The number of test-takers across South Carolina increased by 27.9%, while the nation only increased 3.7%.

With those increases in test-takers, the nation, state and Lexington District One all saw a dip in total average SAT scores.

The College Board assessment includes evidence-based reading and writing (ERW) and mathematics. The latest SAT results come from seniors who graduated in 2019.

Advanced Placement

The state also released results of Advanced Placement exams taken by last year’s high schoolers. Students took the majority of AP exams last year in subject areas such as English language and composition, United States history, human geography, English literature and composition, psychology and biology.

Like the SAT, the district increased not only the number of test-takers but also the number of tests those students took. The district saw a 14.2% increase in AP exam test takers and a 15.7% increase in the number of exams taken.

Students who score a 3, 4 or 5 on an AP exam could qualify to receive credit for the equivalent course at a college or university. Statewide, 58% of students scored a 3 or higher, compared to 53% for Lexington District One students who took an AP exam, a -2.1% decrease over last year.

On the other hand, the number of students scoring 3 or higher at White Knoll High went up 2.9% and 0.9% at River Bluff High.
