New Gilbert area elementary school named Centerville Elementary

Apr 30 2019

On Tuesday, April 30, 2019, during a board meeting, Lexington County School District One named a future elementary school in the Gilbert attendance area — Centerville Elementary School.

Centerville Elementary, scheduled for construction at 4147 Augusta Highway in Gilbert on a 22.57 acre site on Augusta Highway (Highway #1) between Rice Drive and Southland Road and known as Elementary School #17 in the building plan, will house Kindergarten through Grade 5.

Designed for 1,000 students with the capacity to serve 1,200 students, the finished school will be about 128,000 square feet and should take about 12 months to build.

In February of 2019, the Board of Trustees awarded a construction management at-risk contract to build the new elementary school to M.B. Kahn Construction Co., Inc., located in Columbia. Jumper, Carter, Sease Architects, located in West Columbia, is designing the project, which allows the district to use existing elementary school design plans or “prototypes” it previously used to build Deerfield Elementary, Meadow Glen Elementary and Rocky Creek Elementary schools. Although the new Gilbert school will not mirror those schools, using the same prototypes can save the district as much as a year’s time, as well as money, on architectural fees and construction costs.

As the district chooses names for schools, it seeks feedback from parents, community members, students, etc., and looks for names with historical significance in the area. As part of the process, district administrators met with various groups in the Gilbert school community, considered a number of names, and recommended the name Centerville Elementary School because of its strong historical significance to the area.

In the early 1900s nearby the site of the new school property, Centerville School was established. It began as a one teacher school. Within a few years, a more modern two-teacher schoolhouse was built. In the year 2000, the original two-room schoolhouse became a residence. In fact, available maps and documents still refer to this area as the
Centerville area. The administration and community are very excited about honoring the long-standing history of education in the Gilbert community by naming the new school Centerville Elementary School.
