NOTES FROM THE

The Health Room is operated daily by a registered school nurse assisted at times by parent volunteers.  It is an emergency station, which is not designed for the care of seriously ill or injured children or those needing extended care.

Students are not treated in the Health Room for old wounds, lacerations, splinters, etc.  Injuries that occur outside of the school should be treated at home.

Please remember that the school nurse does not supply any medications.

The only medications given will be those brought to school in the original container and accompanied by a signed written permission which includes the child's name, medication name, dosage and time it is to be given.  Only medications prescribed to be given four times a day (every six hours) or more often will be administered at school.  Medications prescribed to be given three times a day (every eight hours) or less than three times a day should be given at home, before and after school hours.

Because of the relationship of aspirin to Reye's Syndrome, aspirin will not be administered unless a written order signed by the physician is presented.

There are times when a student should remain home for his/her own welfare and for the protection of others.  Students should remain home if they have any of the following symptoms:
1.  Fever, temperature of 100 degrees or higher within the past
24 hours, with or without other symptoms.  Students may
return to school when temperature has remained below
        100 degrees for 24 hours without fever-reducing
        medication.
2.  A cold in the contagious stage; severe nasal discharge that
        is not clear in color
3.  Any communicable disease (chicken pox, measles, etc.)
4.  Any undiagnosed rash or skin eruption
5.  Vomiting and/or diarrhea within the past 12 hours.  If vomiting
or diarrhea has occurred during the night or in the morning,
the student should remain at home.
6.  Untreated head lice or scabies

If a student develops a communicable disease, the parent should notify the school.  This will alert the teachers to observe other students for symptoms.

When a student becomes ill at school, the parent/guardian will be notified and expected to come for the child immediately.  Please supply the school with the name of an emergency contact person who has consented to pick up and care for your child when a parent/guardian cannot be reached.

It is very important that the school be informed of any change in address, home phone, business phone or change of an emergency contact person.

Remember that the school nurse will not diagnose or prescribe treatment.  This is the responsibility of the family physician.

!!!!!!!!ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS!!!!!!!!!

The Hepatitis B shot series
is required by South Carolina State Law for all students.

The Hepatitis B shot series takes about 6 months to complete.  The series must be completed and an up-to-date immunization certificate on file with the school in order for your child to start or continue in school.
