Kindergarten students at Midway Elementary School attend full-day kindergarten from 7:45 a.m. - 2:15 p.m. If parents do not want their child in a full-day program, the parents may elect to pick up their child at 10:15 a.m. No mid-day bus transportation will be provided for these students. Children must be five on or before September 1 to be able to enroll in kindergarten.
First and second grade students receive their academic instruction from one teacher in a self-contained class. Third grade students receive all their academic instruction from two teachers. One teaches math, science, health, and social studies. The other one teaches language arts. Fourth grade students receive all their academic instruction from two teachers. One teaches math and science/health, and the other one teaches language arts. One of the two teachers will also be the student's social studies teacher.
All students receive physical education, music, art, and computer lab instruction weekly. All students also visit the media center on a weekly basis. Students in grades 1 - 4 receive French instruction twice weekly for twenty-five minutes each time.
M.E.S. has two special education self-contained classes. One is for profoundly mentally disabled students and one is for young emotionally disabled students. A full daily schedule is maintained by the teachers and teacher assistants.
Students needing academic assistance in grades 1-4 may be provided extra help. This help is given in the classroom by an academic instructional assistant.
Children who qualify for special education are served by a resource teacher. Students may receive one to three hours of service per day according to their IEP (Individualized Education Program). Students may also qualify for speech services, occupational therapy and physical therapy. Students may also receive services of a visual itinerant teacher or hearing itinerant teacher.
Academically talented students in grades 3-4 may be served in the EAGLE (Educational Activities Geared for Learning Excellence) program. These students are selected each spring by a special screening process.
