All faculty and staff members are vital to our success at Red Bank Elementary. YOU are the most influential factor in our children’s success. The principal will approve all personal and professional leave on an individual basis. For preplanned absences, school board policy requires that a leave form be filled out at least two days ahead (preferably more). A substitute should be secured before submitting the form and the name of the substitute should be written on the bottom of the form. For emergency or unexpected absences, a leave form should be filled out on the day you return. A copy of the leave form will be returned to your box. These forms are located in the form rack in the teacher’s workroom.
Employees are expected to be at work from 7:25 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. except office staff, custodial staff or lunchroom staff who works longer or varied hours. How the school day begins can greatly influence the direction of the rest of the day. Teachers should be at classroom doors to welcome students. If staff members should be tardy for any reason, they should call the school office so that arrangements can be made to supervise the students until the staff member arrives. All staff members need to sign in and out themselves each day in order to keep accurate attendance records for the district office and their auditors. If you need to leave school early for any reason, please see the principal or an assistant principal. Emergency situations do arise and we need to make sure that arrangements have been made for the supervision of students in your absence.
Staff members are encouraged to review current leave policy and note that leave cannot be taken on the following days except with the superintendent’s approval:
First five days of student attendance
Last five days of student attendance
Scheduled in-service, work days
Day before/after a holiday
Teachers and staff members should try to secure their own substitutes if possible. If you cannot secure a substitute in advance, please contact the substitute coordinator as soon as possible. All teachers must have up-to-date substitute folders in case of an emergency. These folders should include the following:
1. Emergency information
2. Daily schedules
3. Homeroom procedures (Attendance, lunch money, etc.)
4. “Where to go for help?” (Teacher next door…)
5. Duty Schedule
6. Lunchroom (Schedule, procedures, seating…)
7. Information concerning bus riders, car riders, daycare riders, and walkers
8. End of the day procedures
9. Appropriate learning experiences for the class
Students are able to finish a normal school day’s work much faster when a substitute is
orchestrating the day. Please remember that it is necessary to “overplan” to ensure a profitable day for the students. For example, a lesson plan book alone would not be appropriate to leave for a substitute. Remember that emergency plans should be ready and easily accessible for the first day of school. Your emergency plans should be updated as needed. These emergency plans should be placed in the rack by your door that holds your emergency procedures handbook. A copy should be turned into the school office by the first day of school.
It is the responsibility of each teacher to see to it that his/her certificate is in order and up-to-date. If there is any doubt about a certificate, the teacher should contact the Human Resources office at the District Office (359-4178). Lexington School District One is participating in a pilot program to assist with certification issues. The State Department form must be submitted to the Human Resources Office instead of the SDE. These forms are available in the forms rack in the teacher’s workroom and on the shared driver. All updated or newly issued certificates are sent to the Human Resources office and then forwarded on to the staff member. If you have specific questions, please contact this office.
There are basically three types of evaluation in use in Lexington District One for regular classroom teachers. The type of evaluation is dependent upon teacher contract status and all fall under the category of ADEPT (Assisting, Developing, and Evaluating Professional Teaching).
Beginning teachers are in the Induction Year status and must participate in the district designed Induction program (LIFT: Lexington One’s Induction Program for First Year Teachers). A comprehensive orientation will be held with these teachers at the beginning of the year. A district orientation will then be held. School orientations will be held afterward (see school calendar). Assistance teams will be assigned to each teacher consisting of a mentor teacher, and building administrator, and at least one other member. Observations and conferences will be held according to the LIFT guidelines. In addition, Support Group meetings will be held according to the district schedule throughout the year with conferences held at the end of the first semester and prior to the issuance of a teacher contract. Specific information will be provided to Induction Year teachers regarding the LIFT program in these orientations and a district-prepared notebook. Teachers who successfully complete the Induction Year are eligible for employment under an annual contract. Teachers who do not successfully complete the Induction Year are eligible for a provisional contract and must meet certain requirements to be able to move to the annual teacher status. (This provisional status is only for one year).
Teachers who are in their second year of teaching and have satisfactorily completed their Induction Year contract (LIFT) are called annual and must be evaluated with the TEAM instrument (Team-based Evaluation and Assistance Model, the district’s form of the ADEPT model). This is an in-depth evaluation model centered on the ten Performance Dimensions identified by the state. An evaluation team consisting of two or three members specially selected and trained will make consensus judgments. Comprehensive training and an orientation will be provided to these teachers in the implementation of the model. Teachers may be recommended for one additional year at this status (annual) if the first year is not successful.
Teachers who complete the annual year satisfactorily are called continuing teachers and are placed on a three-year evaluation cycle using the GBE (Goals Based Evaluation) model. The GBE process promotes accomplishing professional growth goals, established by teachers in consultation with their building administrator. Participating teachers will develop a minimum of three goals for professional growth and development:
1. Content area of the teacher
2. Instruction, assessment or technology
3. Extracurricular or professional service
At least one goal should be completed annually prior to the end of the school year. During these years informal evaluations will be conducted once each semester. Some teachers may be asked to complete the more formal observation model (TEAM).

Professional Dress
All staff members are expected to dress in a professional manner in accordance with the expectations of their job. If you have any questions about certain styles of dress, please see the principal. Every Friday is SPIRIT DAY. School spirit attire (shirts with the RBE logo can be worn with jeans) is appropriate for these special days. P.E. field days and grade level field trip days are two examples of when other attire may be appropriate. DRESS FOR SUCCESS!!
