"C-CATS (Clemson’s Challenge for Academically Talented Students) is a leadership camp run by Clemson University and the Youth Learning Institute. I was nominated at my last school by my guidance counselor and required me to be in the top 20% of my class. One of the things you do at C-CATS is visit and tour Clemson University and do a lab focused on the Mystery of the Dead Hemlock. You try and figure out what is slowly killing the Hemlock tree using DNA samples found on the tree. We learned from the 2 hour lab that the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid which sucks the sap off of the Hemlock, while giving the Hemlock needles a toxin from its salvia. The loss of sap kills the leaves, thus not allowing the tree to be able to-do photosynthesis."
