Mrs. Ann O'Cain

Work Experience
 
My career began in 1993 as a physical education teacher and coach at J.B. Beck Middle School in my hometown of Georgetown, South Carolina. While at Beck Middle School, I was the head coach for B-Team girls’ basketball. I also served as head coach of varsity tennis and junior varsity volleyball and was an assistant varsity softball coach at Georgetown High School. In 1999, I moved to Georgetown High School and served as a special education resource teacher.

In 2000, I joined Kershaw County School District as an eighth grade English Language Arts teacher at Camden Middle School and later a health teacher at Lugoff-Elgin Middle School. While at LEMS, I was an assistant volleyball coach and head junior varsity softball coach. While in Kershaw County School District, I completed the Kershaw County School District Aspiring Administrators Program.

In 2004, I joined Lexington District One as an assistant principal at Gilbert High School and was promoted to principal of the school in 2007. During my time as principal, GHS received the SREB High Schools That Work Silver Award for Applied Learning and was named a Palmetto Gold Showcase School. In addition, I supported and saw many of my students earn numerous state and national awards in athletics, fine arts, HOSA, FFA, and Skills USA.

In 2018, I moved to a new role as District Section 504 Coordinator and the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Officer.

I earned a Bachelor of Science in physical education from University of South Carolina, Coastal and a Master of Education in educational leadership from University of South Carolina. A South Carolina School Leadership Executive Institute (SLEI) graduate, I also received executive coaching through the Lexington One Executive Leadership Program. I have served as an AdvancED team evaluator and HSTW team evaluator across South Carolina and earned my coaching certification from the National School Reform Faculty (NSRF) Critical Friends Group (CFG).

I am a member of the South Carolina Association of School Administrators (SCASA), the Council of Administrators of Special Education (CASE), the Council of Educators for Students with Disabilities (CESD), and a past member of the National Association of Secondary School Administrators (NASSP), the South Carolina Athletic Administrators Association (SCAAA), Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) and South Carolina Association for Career and Technical Education (SCACTE).

 
Personal Information and Hobbies 

I am married to Max O’Cain, a Consulting Engineer for Westinghouse Electric Company. I am also the mother of two children. My son, Danny Burt, 34, graduated from Gilbert High School and the University of South Carolina.  He is married to Samantha Johnston. They have two beautiful children, Lola Ann 2 1/2 and Fisher Altman, 9 months.  My daughter, Mary Beth O’Cain, 25, graduated from Gilbert High School and Clemson University. She currently works for Home Advantage Realty Company and is pursuing an MBA at Clemson University. My husband and I reside in Lexington and enjoy boating on Lake Murray, swimming, traveling, cooking, reading, and spending time with our loved ones.

After college graduation, I worked in the medical field as a Medical Technologist until 2000. I transitioned into teaching and taught physical science, biology, anatomy/physiology, and physics at Batesburg-Leesville High School from August 2000 to May 2011. I was then hired as an Assistant Principal here at Lexington High School.

Personal Information/Hobbies:

I was born and raised just down the road in Leesville, SC. I currently reside in Lexington with one of my children, Brooke. My oldest child, Gracyn, attends Clemson University. I enjoy doing crafty things at home and watching sporting events of all types, especially Clemson Women’s Golf and any of our Wildcat athletic teams. I am a member of Mt. Horeb UMC.

Mr. Brendan Cafferty

11th Grade Student Services

On Tuesday, October 4, 2022, the Lexington County School District One Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Brendan P. Cafferty as assistant principal of Lexington High School. Cafferty returns to Lexington District One after teaching chemistry and physical science in District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties.

An experienced educator, Cafferty first stepped into the classroom in 1996 as a science teacher at Savannah-Chatham County School District. In 1997, he first joined Lexington District One to teach earth science, physical science and algebra at White Knoll Middle. Later, he taught biology and marine science at White Knoll High School, where he was also the varsity boys soccer coach. 

In 2003, Cafferty joined the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control to serve as the bioterrorism exercise coordinator. Cafferty stepped back into the classroom in 2012 to teach biology and coach varsity soccer at Swansea High School in Lexington County School District Four. 

In 2014, Cafferty rejoined the Lexington District One family to serve as an administrator and assistant athletic director. Cafferty became the high school director of the South Carolina Virtual Charter School in 2020, before stepping into his current teaching role in District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties.

Cafferty graduated from University of South Carolina, earning a bachelor’s degree in marine science, a Master of Teaching in biology and a Master of Education in educational administration. He participated in the Principal Induction Program, the Assistant Principal Program for Leadership Excellence and the SAFE-T training.
