Medical Homebound
The district provides medical homebound instruction to students who are unable to attend school due to an accident, illness, or pregnancy. To be considered for services, a licensed physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant must complete the Medical Homebound Application, certifying that the student is unable to attend school but may benefit from instruction delivered at home or in a hospital setting.
While a physician may recommend medical homebound services or support an application, the final decision is made by the district superintendent or an approved designee.
Medical homebound instruction is a short-term intervention designed to help students who are unable to attend school due to medical reasons stay current with their studies and ease their transition back to the classroom. It is not intended to fully replicate the school-based program, nor can it replace the social, instructional, and developmental experiences provided through in-person attendance. The primary goal is to support continued learning and facilitate a smooth return to school as soon as the student is medically able. Medical homebound should not be considered a long-term substitute for regular school attendance; rather, it should be viewed as a short-term intervention or a temporary stopgap.
While students are receiving homebound support, they are still subject to state and district attendance requirements. If the student is absent from or not made available for a scheduled homebound session, the student is considered absent from school and the session will not be rescheduled. If a student has five (5) unexcused sessions or the equivalent of, the district’s truancy procedures will be initiated, and homebound services may be revoked.
The amount of instruction provided through medical homebound is determined by the school district based on each student’s individual needs. Students approved for full-time medical homebound services will receive a minimum of five hours of instruction per week. However, there is no maximum limit. The actual number of instructional hours will be based on what is appropriate for the student and may vary. Instructional time and scheduling are determined at the discretion of the district and may be adjusted as needed to support the student’s progress.
