Homeschooling

In Lexington County School District One, we respect our parents’ right to teach their students at home to serve their child’s individual needs. The Board of Trustees approves home school applications which meet the following standards:

  • Parents must hold a high school diploma, the equivalent general education development (GED) certificate, or a higher degree.
  • The instructional day must be at least four and one-half hours, and the instruction year is at least one hundred eighty days.
  • The curriculum includes reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies for all grades. In grades seven through twelve, composition and literature is required.
  • A semiannual progress report including attendance records must be submitted to the school district.
  • Students must have access to library facilities.
  • Parents must maintain a portfolio of samples of the student’s academic work.

Students must participate in the annual statewide testing program:

  • KRA - Grade 5K
  • SCPASS – Grades 4 and 6, Science
  • SC Ready - Grade 3-8, ELA, Math
  • End of Course Examination Program (EOCEP) - Algebra 1, English 2, US History, and Biology
  • The ACT or SAT – Third year of high school
  • Ready to Work – Third year of high school

You may access homeschool applications online. Applications are also available at the homeschool office located in Lexington School District One, Building 2. The address is 105 Tarrar Springs Road.
