Roof returns to Lexington District One to serve as chief communications officer

On Tuesday, October 18, 2022, the Lexington County School District One Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Elizabeth “Libby” D. Roof as the district’s new chief communications officer. Roof currently serves as Richland School District Two’s senior chief officer for communications. As Lexington District One’s chief communications officer, Roof will lead the district’s strategic communications and public relations efforts, while serving as the district’s spokesperson and supporting district stakeholders.

A communications professional with 23 years of experience in public relations and internal and external communications, Roof has spent most of her career working in public K–12 education. In 1998, Roof stepped into the field of communications by serving as the marketing and public relations coordinator for IMIC Hotels, managing two frequent traveler programs and writing releases, newsletters, website copy and brochures.

Roof joined the South Carolina Department of Transportation in 2000 to serve as the program coordinator for the Office of Beautification Programs. There, she coordinated statewide litter abatement programs, established partnerships for highway beautification projects and planned events such as dedications and award ceremonies.

In 2002, Roof joined the Lexington District One family as the communications director. During her 11 years in this position, she planned and executed communications strategies and long-range public relations programs targeting district stakeholders. Roof took the helm at Richland School District Two in 2014, serving as the district’s spokesperson and spearheading the district’s communications, marketing, media production, public relations and strategic partnership efforts for more than eight years.

Roof graduated from Clemson University in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts in education. She earned a master’s degree of mass communications in public relations from the University of South Carolina in 1998.

An active member of the community, Roof currently serves on the Board of Visitors for Clemson University. She also served as a mentor for Forest Lake Elementary School in RSD2.

Professionally, she is an active member of the South Carolina Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association, where she has served as president, vice president and treasurer. She is an active member of the National School Public Relations Association, serving as a conference presenter in 2016, and the Public Relations Society of America. Additionally, she participated in the 2017 Alpha Class of the Midlands Educator Leadership Experience and the United Way of the Midlands as both a Women in Philanthropy member and Palmetto Society member.

Roof, a product of Lexington District One, lives in the district with her husband and two sons.
