In order to take the GED test:
- You must be at least 17 years of age
- Aren't enrolled in high school
- Do not have a high school diploma from an accredited high school
There are four sections:
- Reasoning Through Language Arts (150 minutes)
- Mathematical Reasoning (115 minutes)
- Science (90 minutes)
- Social Studies (70 minutes)
You do not need to take all sections in the same day. A passing score is 145. Once a section is passed it does not need to be retaken. Each section costs $37.50 and retakes cost $17.50. You will need a debit/credit card to schedule your test.

What is the GED?
GED stands for the Tests of General Educational Development. It originally began in 1942 as a way for military personel or veterans who had gone to fight in WWII to finish their high school diploma even though they were too old to attend high school after they returned from war. Do I have to attend classes to take the GED ?
No you do not. If you feel you are ready without attending classes you can schedule your test by going to GED.com and creating an account. See more information about scheduling your test here
The GED Test is open to anyone that needs a high school equivalency, 17 years of age or older. In South Carolina, you can be 16*, 17 or 18 and take the GED® test if you have a South Carolina Verification of School Withdrawal form completed by the principal or attendance supervisor of the last school you attended.
*If you are 16 years old, you must be under the jurisdiction of DJJ or court order letter must be sent into the state GED® office in Columbia.

If I don't have to take classes to obtain a GED, what does your program offer?
Taking the GED Test can be quite overwhelming. What we offer in our GED Prep classes is a way to break down what each individual needs to be successful. We have certified teachers leading each class. We offer a scholarship program in order to pay for your GED. We walk with you every step of the way.

Can I take the GED online?
There are certain restrictions, but the GED is offered in an online platform for those who qualify. There is an age requirement of 18 years or older, and you must pass the practice test (score "green".) Read more detailed information about the online version of the GED test.

Nope. You could be too young, but never too old.

I am 16 years old. Can I take the GED?

Can I go into the military with a GED?
It depends on the branch of service. Entrance criteria is different for each branch. You will need to take the ASVAB, and a qualifying score varies with military needs.

Can I go to college with a GED?
Yes. Many of our students enroll at Midlands Tech after obtaining their GED and then transfer to a 4 year college. Some have even entered a 4 year college immediately after obtaining their GED.
